ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas is leading a group of Attorneys General from across the nation in calling for an end to the “zero tolerance” policy of separating families that cross the border illegally.

In a letter addressed to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the attorneys general call on the administration to what they refer to as “draconian practices,” calling the policy “inhumane,” and saying it raises concerns of the violation of children’s rights.

“Put simply, the deliberate separation of children and their parents who seek lawful asylum in America is wrong,” the letter states. “This practice is contrary to American values and must be stopped. We demand that you immediately reverse these harmful policies, as it is in the best interests of the children and families affected.”
